Interview with Darlene Fredrickson, Owner of Pink Daisy Treasures
Q: How did you get started with your business?
A:I was hosting Holiday Boutiques in my living room as a fun way to bring togetherfriends, who were also crafters, and sell to the local community. We invited all our friends and the moms we knew from school to join us for hot cider, cookies, conversation, and shopping. The Boutiques were a big hit, so I decided to become an official business and I openedan Etsy site.
Q: What is the biggest challenge you face with your business?
A: The biggest challenge is deciding what items to make, I want to make everything!
Q: When did you first start making?
A:I sewed my first pillow when I was a Campfire Girl, this would earn me an honor bead for my vest. I was around 8 years old. My mother showed me how to use the sewing machine and gave me the leftoverfabric from a comforter she made for me. I loved using the sewing machine! My mom was always making outfits for my sister and me, so I was always around fabric, getting to pick out colors and patterns.
Q: Have you tried other crafts besides sewing?
A:I’ve tried lots of other craftslike baking, gardening, knitting and crocheting. I made custom draperies for several years and renovated several homes.I still really enjoy doing all these things.But, I always come back to sewing items that I like to give as gifts, hoping the recipient enjoys the colors and feelof the items as much as I do!
Q: Can you tell us more about how you make your products?
A:I don't have any employees so I do all the production steps on my own. I prewash and iron all the material to minimize shrinkage, cut, sew, and spend timein betweenfinding the perfect fabric and planning what goes into production next.My items are usually one of a kind or small batch production, soI don't usually buy my fabric in bulk, except for a few staple items.When buying fabric, I need to know the fiber content, how it's going to wear, will it shrink much, will the color fade, does the fabric sing to me and say make something with me. I want my customer to feel happy when they use and see my items in their homes.
